Longman現代英英辞典の説明も見ていきます。
(誰かや何かを慎重に平らな場所に置くこと)
と説明がある通り「横にする、置く」というニュアンスを汲み取ります。
特に「何かを置く」というのがポイントです。
to put yourself in a position in which your body is flat on the floor or on a bed
(あなたの身体が床やベッドの上などで平らに置かれている状態のこと、置くこと)
という「横になる、横たわる」という部分と
(わざと誰かに真実では無いことを教えること)
という「嘘をつく」という意味を理解します。
簡単にまとめると、
layは「何かを(横に)置く」、lieは「横になっている状態」「嘘をつく」という意味ですね。
lay/lieの違いの覚え方
lay your hands on me「私にあなたの手を置いて」(私を捕まえて)
lie back 「(自分が)あおむけに横たわる」
layとlieを単純に他動詞自動詞で覚えても頭に入りにくいので、
このようによく見る例文(熟語)で覚えると良いと思います。
(lay your hands on meの方は目的語が入っているので他動詞だと分かりますよね)
そして意味の違いをはっきりと理解してから、動詞の変化を覚えることをおすすめします。
