Firstly I want to congratulate Jennifer.

We played in the semis of the us open so a couple months ago.
And I told everyone that would listen that you’re gonna be a problem
and I was right.

It’s really incredible to you know for me.It’s really hard to play and to see your growth over the pass few months is really cool for me to see.

And I know that you’re probably working very hard so I want to congratulate your team over there as well.

I know for me my team’s like my family. So I’m sure you guys have a lot of really cool adventures together. So congratulations to you guys as well.

And I know you talked about your mom so. I’m sure she’s really proud of you and I for sure know that you know everyone your friends and your family are definitely very proud of you and I think we’re going to play a lot matches so used to do that.

And then I’d like to thank my team. I’ve been with my team too long
a month and some change we’ve been through quarantine together and for me they’re like my family.

You know they’re the ones with me through my training through my matches through my you know nervous talks before my matches and I’m really appreciative towards them. So I really want to thank you guys and this one’s for you.

Lastly but not least I want to thank you guys thank you for coming and watching it feels really incredible for me.

I didn’t play my last grand slam with fans so just to have this energy it really means a lot. Thank you so much for coming.

Thank you for opening your hearts and your arms towards us and for sure I feel like playing a grand slam right now is a super privilege and it’s something that I won’t take for granted.

以前よりそういった傾向はありましたが、本件を皮切りに脚光を浴びそうですね。

少し解説してみたいと思います。

本件では3文目の解説が当てはまりますね。

(男性でも女性でも無いと認識している、表現している人や関係しているもの)

theyの意味

今回追加された4文目を見てみます。

(自分の性を”nonbinary”とする人を指すのに使われる)

今までのように「彼らは、彼女らは、それらは」などの内容は変わらず、新しい意味が加わったということになりますね。

単数代名詞「they」の動詞はどうなる？

これは自分の考えも入っていますが、今まで通り変わらずに

be動詞…are(were)

一般動詞…そのまま

だと思います。

これまでも不確定な人(たとえ一人だと想定出来たとしても)を指す場合などにtheyを使う場面は珍しくなく、今回も同じような考えで大丈夫だと思います。(間違っていたら修正します)

この件のTwitterを見ていると、当然ながら

・反対の人

がいました

反対意見の中には、

・ジェンダーへの理解が浅い人

・文法がおかしくなるという人

・新しい言葉を作って対応すべきだと言う人

In the fifth book of the Manyoshu, where the term Reiwa originates, the writings of two poets offer important insights for this moment. The first poet, Otomo no Tabito, writes of the potential and possibilities of spring. The second poet, Yamanoue no Okura, a good friend of the first, reminds us of our solemn responsibilities to family and future generations.

Both are beautiful lessons, passed down from ancient wisdom.

So today, we embrace the limitless potential now before us: to cooperate on new frontiers of technology, space, infrastructure, defense, commerce, diplomacy, and many other areas of shared promise. We also remember that our alliance is a rich inheritance, and a gift we must pass on to our children, just as the sons and daughters of Japan preserve the ancient poetry of the Manyoshu.

接続詞whileは〜の間という意味もありますが、ここでは「一方では」の方がしっくりきますね。

loved(愛される)とendeared(慕われる)の違い

Akihito has endeared himselfのところ、なぜ「愛される」という文章では無かったのか少し疑問に思いました(海外の方はなんとなくloveの表現が好きなような気がしたので)

そこで国語辞典で調べてみると、慕われるという言葉の意味には「尊敬する、ひかれる、憧れる」という意味も含まれていることが分かりました。

なるほど、違いを理解出来るとしっくりきますね。

万葉集から取り入れたというこの言葉は、音の響きとしても美しいと思います。

とあります。

 

こういった場合の主語は「日本政府」でも「日本国民」でもなくJapanと表すんですね。

まさしく「日本国」といった感じでしょう。

「令和」はorder and peace or harmony

Japan named its new imperial era “Reiwa,” — using two characters meaning “order,” and “peace” or “harmony” — with the move coming a month before a new emperor ascends the Chrysanthemum Throne in the world’s oldest continuous monarchy.

orderは「注文する」や「指図する」といった動詞の意味もありますが、この場合は「秩序がある静粛な状態」というニュアンスだと思います。

古典に合わせる英語は素朴で馴染みのある単語に置き換えるとしっくりきますね。

Microsoft leads the way in banning April Fools’ Day pranks


Everyone hates April Fools’ Day, and Microsoft is taking a stand against its own corporate pranks. Microsoft’s marketing chief Chris Capossela has warned all employees to not participate in the process of annoying hoaxes on Monday. In an internal memo, obtained and verified by The Verge, Capossela explains that “data tells us these stunts have limited positive impact and can actually result in unwanted news cycles.” He encourages all teams inside Microsoft not to do any public-facing April Fools’ Day stunts.

“I appreciate that people may have devoted time and resources to these activities, but I believe we have more to lose than gain by attempting to be funny on this one day,” says Capossela. That’s probably a safe bet, as we’ve seen some April Fools’ Day pranks backfire spectacularly in the past. Google was forced to apologize for adding Despicable Me minions into emails and muting threads a few years ago, causing email havoc for Gmail users. Microsoft has also participated in many April Fools’ Day pranks over the years, including an MS-DOS mobile for Windows Phone and Google insults.

Writing this now to organize my thoughts and try to put in words what I’ve been feeling.Recently a lot of parents have been coming up to me and telling me that their kids look up to me, those words literally blew me away. I was honestly so shocked and felt this huge responsibility because I remembered how important my role models are.Also the fact that the parents themselves were telling me this meant they approved (which is mind blowing to me). Fast forward a few days and I’m here at Indian wells, I see all these kids that look so happy to see me and they ask for pictures and autographs…Honestly I wanted to cry because my heart feels so full in these moments and I realize that it isn’t just about tennis, it’s about inspiring the next generation- and seeing all these kids, (a.k.a my babies), I start thinking about when I was a kid and all the people that inspired me to dream big and reach for my dreams.
