same・equal・identical・equivalentの違い｜「同じ」の使い分け

海外通販で、見た目が同じ2つの商品を見つけたとします。形までそっくりなら identical、値段だけ同じなら equal、形は違っても同じ役割を果たすなら equivalent が合います。日常的に「同じ」と広く言うなら same です。

日本語ではどれも「同じ・等しい」と訳せますが、何が一致しているかを見ると迷いにくくなります。

same は、「別のものではなく同一のもの」と「別々だが種類・特徴などが同じ」の両方に使える基本語です。比較するときは通常 the same の形にします。

identical：細部まで一致している

identical は、2つ以上の物の外見・構造・内容・設定などが同じで、違いが見当たらないことを強く示します。日常的な same よりも、厳密な一致を意識させる語です。
