【英語】price / prize の意味の違いと使い分け

price と prize は見た目が似ていますが、意味は別です。price は「価格」、prize は「賞・賞品」。買う文脈か、勝ってもらう文脈かで判定できます。

まず定義の差（語義の芯）

price

商品・サービスに設定された金額。動詞では「値付けする」。

• the price of oil（原油価格）
• price a product（商品に値段をつける）

prize

競争や抽選で与えられる賞・賞品。動詞では「高く評価する」。

• win first prize（一等賞を取る）
• a Nobel Prize（ノーベル賞）

使い分け基準

1. 値段・コストの話 → price
2. 受賞・景品の話 → prize
3. 定型で覚える: at a reasonable price / win a prize
