distant は、場所・時間・関係などが「遠い、離れた」という意味の形容詞です。人の態度について「よそよそしい、感情を見せない」という意味にもなります。

remote も「遠い」と訳せますが、中心にあるのは中心地から遠く離れた・隔絶したという感覚です。そこから「遠隔の」「可能性がごくわずかな」という意味にも広がります。

distantの基本は、話し手のいる場所から物理的に遠いことです。場所だけでなく、遠くから聞こえる音や、遠くに見える物にも使えます。

be distant from で「〜から遠い」と表せます。ただし日常的な距離を単純に述べるなら、far from のほうが会話では一般的です。

distantの意味② 遠い過去・未来

空間だけでなく、現在から大きく離れた時点にもdistantを使います。

distantの意味③ 遠い親戚・よそよそしい態度

a distant relative は「遠い親戚」、a distant cousin は「遠い親戚にあたるいとこ」です。血縁関係が近くないことを表します。

remoteの意味① 遠隔地・辺ぴな場所

remoteは、町や都市、交通・サービスの中心から遠く離れた場所を表します。単なる距離だけでなく、行きにくさ・隔絶感を含みやすい語です。

「遠隔地」は文脈に応じて a remote area、「遠隔地に」は in a remote area と表せます。

remoteの意味② IT・仕事で「遠隔の」

技術を使って通常の場所から離れて操作・参加する場合はremoteが基本です。

a remote possibility や a remote chance は「わずかな可能性、ほとんど見込みのない可能性」という意味です。場所の遠さから、実現との隔たりを表す用法へ広がっています。

  計画が変わる可能性がわずかにあります。
• The chances of success are remote.
  成功の見込みはごくわずかです。

not have the remotest idea は「まったく見当もつかない」という強調表現です。
