[動]信じる、信頼する、確信する
☆ポイント☆相手や事象などを正しく真実だと思うという意味。使い方として、彼を信じる(believe him)、彼の行動を信じる(believe that he did)など、目的語(格)を取る。

[句動]〜の存在を信じる、〜の有効性を信じる
☆ポイント☆実在しないとされているものや科学的根拠が無いものを信じるという意味。例えば神を信じる(believe in God)など。「信頼している」という意味もある。

believeについては
something is true or that someone is telling the truth
(真実であることや誰かが本当だと言うこと)
to think that something is true or possible, although you are not completely sure
(たとえ完全に確信が持てなかったとしても真実であるとか、可能性が高いと考えること)
という説明に「正しいと思う、信じる」という意味を汲み取ります。
believe inについては
to be sure that someone or something exists
(誰かもしくは何かが存在すると確信すること)
to think that something is effective or right
(何かが効果的もしくは正しいと考えること)
との説明があります。believeにinが付くだけでニュアンスが変わってくるので注意していきたいですね。
また、
to trust someone and be confident that they will be successful
(誰かを信頼したり成功すると自信がある)
というように「信頼している」という意味もある事も併せて覚えていきたいです。
